Writing to Understand
I saw this tweet today.
This makes perfect sense to me. I have trouble prioritizing this task. Each time I sit down to write something on a news item or something I want to learn, I get stuck. Or I write a bunch of drivel that makes no sense.
Perhaps that tweet doesn't make perfect sense to me?
The point, I believe now, he's trying to make is that you have to keep writing through the drivel to get to a clear understanding of the topic.
Like waiting out the storm, you have to put in the time and deal with the shit to get to the positives on the other side.
I read a lot, but I don't spend enough time writing about what I've finished reading. Occasionally, I will take notes, but I'm not writing a paragraph about what I've just read.
Often, anything I write about a subject is long after a reading or just off the cuff. It's opinion, not something to help me understand the words and ideas I've just consumed.
I need to try this more than what I currently do, which is talk to myself while I walk. It helps me, but I think writing more often could help me understand better.
Time to start building a new habit.
